Choose your necklace length
A chain length is its full end-to-end measurement, including the clasp. Where it sits depends on your neck size, height, proportions and the weight of any pendant.
| Length (cm) | Length (inches) | Typical position |
|---|---|---|
| 35 | 13.78 | Close to the neck |
| 40 | 15.75 | Around the base of the neck |
| 45 | 17.72 | Around the collarbone |
| 50 | 19.69 | Below the collarbone |
| 55 | 21.65 | Upper chest |
| 60 | 23.62 | Around the upper to mid chest |
| 70 | 27.56 | Mid chest |
| 80 | 31.50 | Lower chest |
| 90 | 35.43 | Long, below the chest |
Try the length before you choose
- Cut a piece of string to the necklace length you are considering.
- Place it around your neck and bring the ends together where the clasp would sit.
- Check its position in a mirror with the neckline you plan to wear. Allow for a pendant hanging below the chain.
- Compare a few lengths, or measure a necklace you already like from end to end with its clasp closed.
Chokers, everyday chains & longer necklaces
Short lengths around 35–40 cm sit close to the neck. Lengths around 45–50 cm are often chosen for everyday pendants, while 55–60 cm sit further down the chest. Longer chains around 70–90 cm can create a layered look. Check the exact length and any extender listed on your chosen product.
For layering, try different lengths together so pendants have space to sit comfortably. A wider chain or heavier pendant can change how a necklace drapes.
